Community at Sunset Church

We believe life is best lived together and our groups are one of the best ways to feel you belong and find your people at Sunset. We have groups in the city and in limited parts down the bay. Each group meets regularly to build friendship, encourage one another, care for the common good of our city, grow our relationship with God, and have fun! We’re looking forward to you joining us!

Community Groups

At Sunset Church, we ask members “to regularly participate in the life of Sunset Church by worshiping at weekly services, engaging in community through [community] groups, and serving those inside and outside of the church” so that we can continue to “exist to glorify God by making gospel-transformed disciples of all people, in our city, and in the world.”

And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching. — Hebrews 10:24-25 (CSB)

The author of Hebrews is reminding us that community is not found. Community is built. And the Christian community we are called to is “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone.” (Ephesians 2:20)

The Basics

What are community groups?

A Sunset Community Group is a gathering of individuals who want to understand and live out gospel-transformed lives as a community.

What do Community Groups do?

Break bread, study the Bible, encourage each other to live transformed by the gospel, and pray for each other.

How do I join?

Email Pastor Abe at abe.lee@sunsetchurchsf.org to get connected to a group.

  • “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching…,” Every small group supported by Sunset Church will include an emphasis on making gospel-transformed disciples by focusing on the gospel. This can include spending time in bible study, sharing a devotional, discussing the biblical components of a book or sermon, etc.

  • The hope is that all small groups will include a “breaking of bread” component in their meetings. Just as Jesus practiced with His disciples, and just as His disciples practiced this with their disciples, Sunset Community Groups hope to foster fellowship over food to create a relaxed atmosphere that can foster connections.

  • “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” — Ephesians 2:10

Every small group will be expected to actively engage in living out their faith, either locally or globally at least once a quarter. This could include collectively volunteering to serve in a Sunset Church ministry, or with one of our local mission partners.

  • Prayer is an essential component of Sunset Church. You can learn more about what this means with our online resources here. The goal is to dedicate time in each small group to pray for one another.

  • The hope is to create natural connections between members of the small group. To foster these connections naturally, each small group will be allowed flexibility to cater to the personalities and needs of the individuals involved.

Vineyard is a community for young professionals to be built up to abide in Jesus, the true vine, and to bear much fruit for the glory of God.

We meet on Tuesday nights from 7:45-9:45PM in the CE Open Area (3635 Lawton Street). We also have group serving opportunities at least once a month on a weekend with some local organizations Sunset Church supports. Tuesday nights may look like different bible/book topics, community group time, musical worship, prayer, and discussions. If you would like more information, please contact the leaders of Vineyard at vineyard@sunsetchurchsf.org.
