Mission And The Church

Discussion Questions:

  • What are other Bible passages that speak to the mission of the church? How do these passages give a fuller picture of the mission that Christ gave to the disciples in Acts 1?

  • In addition to it's Biblical commitments, what are some of the values of our church? If you're having a hard time answering this question, consider this thought: what do we as a community spend our money and our time on? What does this demonstrate our values are? What are some of the implications as we compare these values to the things that God values?

  • Just because we spend time and money on a set of things doesn't mean that those things are necessarily core values, but they do give insight into what we think is important. In what ways would you like to see Sunset move in line with a biblical understanding of the church's mission? What would it take for us, together, to move towards what's important? What's one small thing you can do to move in that direction?

Acts 1:6-11

The Ascension

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
